A wonderful view is about more than what you see through the window. Add a garden and suddenly much more of your life can happen outside – breakfast on the terrace, lunch under a tree, growing your own vegetables or simply sitting out with a glass of something cold at the end of the day. And with France offering everything from Atlantic coastline and Alpine peaks to vineyards, forests and rolling farmland, there is no shortage of scenery to choose from.

What do buyers want from their French home?
That picture of French country life isn’t just a cliché. In our 2026 France survey, 62% of buyers told us they were looking for a home in the countryside, making it the most popular type of location.
Then there are the features people want when they get there. More than half of the buyers we surveyed wanted a country home with a view, while around eight in 10 wanted a garden. Together, those answers give a pretty good picture of what many buyers have in mind: space of their own and something lovely to look at.
The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to break the bank to get either. In searching the properties currently for sale on Your Overseas Home, we found homes with wonderful outlooks at prices starting well below €200,000. Spend more and you can add acres of land, woodland, a pool or even your own lake.
The joys – and practicalities – of country living
Buying in the countryside can give you things that are difficult to find in town: more outdoor space, greater privacy and views that can make even doing the washing-up considerably more enjoyable. Your money can also go a surprisingly long way in rural parts of France.
There are practical questions worth asking, however. A huge garden may sound wonderful until you consider who will maintain it when you’re away. Check access, drainage, boundaries and the condition of outbuildings, and think about how far you’ll need to travel for shops, healthcare and other everyday services.
If you’re buying a farmhouse or a home with substantial land, there is another peculiarly French consideration to understand: SAFER. This organisation has certain rights over agricultural and rural property sales and, in some circumstances, can exercise a right of first refusal. In most relevant transactions, SAFER involvement simply means a notification handled by the notaire rather than losing the property – but it is worth understanding before you buy.
