Nouvelle-Aquitaine is one of the newer regions of France, named in 2016 and is situated in the southwest corner of France. It’s home to some of the country’s most popular departments which include Dordogne, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes and Gironde.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is home to over 3 million residents, equating to about 6% of the total population of France. There are several languages spoken in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. France is, of course, the official language of the region but many residents know or speak some Basque, which is most popular in the far south.

Weather in Aquitaine is mostly pretty temperate which aids the laidback lifestyle many come here to enjoy. It’s naturally cooler on the coast and south of the mountains but summers offer lots of sun and winters are mild. 

Nouvelle Aquitaine benefits from a good economy, local tourism, agriculture, innovation and research, plus, several ski resorts. Many are attracted to the region due to its great outdoors. The beauty of the region offers both lush surroundings, picturesque views and opportunity to join in outdoor activity.

The most prominent city in Aquitaine is Bordeaux, a port city on the Garonne River, also the capital of the region. Bordeaux is particularly famous for its eponymous wine and football team FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

In the annual ranking of the best towns and villages in France, a fair few in Nouvelle Aquitaine always make the list. Some of note include Beynac et Cazenac, a charming village on the banks of the Dordogne River, Sare in the Pyrenees Atlantiques, Navarrenx, an ancient, fortified village and Collonges la Rouge, a Limousin village with famously reddish buildings. Another delightful village popular with expats is Monflaquin, a bastide town dating back to the Hundred Year War in Lot-et-Garonne. 

Properties for sale in Nouvelle Aquitaine are extremely varied, which is great news for anyone looking to buy. There are small homes available for as little as €50,000 – they need a bit of work, but worth it if you’re willing to put in some effort yourself. If it’s a historic property you’re looking for, expect to pay around €200,000 for a renovated ancient home. 

Country homes are easy to find in Aquitaine and will usually set you back about €150,000 for a three-bedroom house with a bit of land. However, there is a growing market for renovated properties which are available for around €400,000.
