The Canary Islands or Canaries are a group of Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean, just 67 miles from Africa (about the distance from London to Reading). They are made up of seven individual islands, with the largest being Tenerife.
The other seven islands in the archipelago include La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Weather in the Canaries is generally warm all year round – but not too hot – due to the Mediterranean climate. It’s usually hot and dry in the summer months, with temperatures ranging from 22°C in April, to 29°C in August.
Winters in the Canary Islands are mild and remain warm. The coldest month is typically January however temperatures are still able to reach 21°C in Tenerife and you can swim in the sea all year.
Rainfall varies throughout the winter months and northern parts of the Canaries are more prone to rain due to the high winds. In February, Gran Canaria sees 46mm of rainfall while Lanzarote sees just 14mm. (Met Office, 2022).
The Canaries attract millions of tourists annually, but they are spread throughout the year and the islands rarely feel crowded. They come to for the warm temperatures and relaxed, tourist-friendly ambience. They also come for the variety. Parts of each island can feel very different to each other. While each island in the Canaries boasts several natural attractions, five of them have been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – a.k.a. learning places for sustainable development.
But there’s plenty of fun too! There’s a huge golfing community in the Canaries due to the spectacular year-round weather. If you’re a keen golfer or are looking to enjoy an active retirement, property in the Canary Islands includes golf villas on (or nearby) popular golf resorts. They’ve even carved out a splendid golf course on tiny, mountainous La Gomera.
The islands are known for their rugged landscapes which are the result of volcanic activity. Tenerife is home to an imposing volcano, Mt. Teide, which is still active today. The volcano has its own observatory and is part of Teide National Park which spans 200 square kilometres.
Property for sale in the Canary Islands varies across the Atlantic archipelago. Each island is so different but what they all share is the cool blue ocean that surrounds them.
There are a range of properties for sale in the Canary Islands under €100,000 that need a bit of TLC. You’ll have to put some money back into them to see your returns pay off, but there’s an investment to be made.
Apartments are popular across the Canaries, as they offer spectacular views of unique settings. Studio apartments are available from €90,000 for a basic room and increase in price depending on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you require.
In Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Las Palmas, you can find apartments available for one or two people for under €200,000.
In Lanzarote the older style of white houses with green shutters have been retained, with strong protections against high rises.
In Tenerife, house prices depend on how close to the coast you are. As the archipelago’s largest island, Tenerife has much more to offer in terms of property type. There are lots of apartments on the market in resort-style complexes, complete with shared facilities.
However, if you’re looking for something a little more private, you can expect the price to increase. There is a good selection of rural townhouses and rustic Canarian homes which start at €200,000, which is generally in-line with prices in mainland Spain.
