The Balearic Islands are a cluster of islands (known as an archipelago) just off the coast of eastern Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea. The three main islands are Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.
Due to their location in the west of the Mediterranean Sea, the Balearics enjoy a mostly hot summer climate. However, they are more seasonal than, for example, the Canary Islands and can get chilly in winter. There are mountainous areas too, which can see snow in winter, but also offer some welcome cool in the heat of summer.
Temperatures maximum range from 25-30°C from May to September, autumn temperatures vary between 22-15°C, and the winter, which is usually January to March, temperatures range from 14-18 °C.
Our property portal has a wide range of property for sale in the Balearic Islands. New builds are particularly popular at the moment. However, there’s a huge variety in the houses for sale in the Balearic Islands: villas, cottages, apartments and more.
In recent years, property prices in the Balearics have soared as expats set their sights on sunnier pastures. Property in the Balearics is not cheap. Indeed it is one of Spain’s most expensive areas, attracting A-list celebrity and royal buyers, often more expensive even than the capital, Madrid. Areas in the Balearics that have seen popularity and therefore price increases include the capital, Palma de Mallorca, Binissalem and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
Here’s a quick guide to the Balearic Islands. Mallorca has the most-established property market in the Balearics. Both infrastructure and educational facilities are modern and accessible throughout the island, making it extremely popular to foreign buyers.
Mallorca also has excellent sports facilities, from Rafa Nadal’s tennis academy to cycling trails, countless golf courses and marinas.
The benefit of Mallorca is direct year-round flights from the UK, and explains why prices are generally a bit lower in Menorca and Ibiza, where you need to change planes to reach there in winter.
The price also depends on where you buy, of course. Around the capital, Palma, prices are high. In the more seasonal locations in the East of the island you will pay less.
Apartments in the Balearics are the most popular type of accommodation. Typically available from under €100,000 for a simple one-bedroom flat, the prices go up to €250,000-plus for a coastal apartment with views of the sea. If you’re after a detached home in the Balearics with private land, you’ll be looking at somewhere upwards of €500,000.
Both Catherine Zeta Jones and Rafa Nadal own properties in the Balearic Islands, so it definitely has luxury properties available, if your budget is slightly higher.
