Venice is renowned for its uniqueness and beauty that it almost requires no introduction. From Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice to Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, Venice has long proven to be fertile grounds for exploration in art and literature. Frequently, Venice jostles with Paris for the status of the most romantic city in the world. Venice is a city and the capital of Veneto, in northern Italy. It was built on 118 small islands, interconnected by a collection of canals and bridges. Historically, Venice was the centre of a major maritime republic. It donned the title of the greatest seaport in late medieval Europe, with strong connections to the continent and Asia.
In 1987, Venice and its lagoon was recognised as a UNSECO World Heritage site, for its unique historical, archaeological, urban, artistic and cultural traditions. Perhaps the most special thing about Venice is that it is a car-free city; it is only accessible by foot or boat. The Grand Canal is the focal point: perfect for bobbing along in a pretty gondola or sitting on the edge, enjoying some gelato. In Venice, you’ll find 400 bridges, with Ponte di Rialto being the most famous, as it was memorably painted by Canaletto. Moreover, Venice is an incredible place for art, with highlights being the Murano Glass Museum and the Venice Biennale, best for contemporary talent. Other must-see elements of Venice include Burano Island, known for its colourful houses and the Torecello Cathedral, the oldest building in Venice. Plus, with sixty-eight restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide, Venice is a foodie’s paradise. Every February, Carnevale Festival is held where everyone wears traditional masquerade costumes and dances until dawn, a spectacular event to see and participate in. Additionally, come September, Venice hosts its international film festival, pulling in worldwide stars. Venice benefits from being near to fantastic beaches, the most well-known is the Lido di Jesolo, a 15-kilometre stretch of golden sand and activities.
As Venice is an island, it does require a little more of an adventurous spirit (and a slightly longer journey time) to get to than many Italian destinations. The international airport is Marco Polo, located 4.3 miles to the north of Venice. You can get a bus, water taxi or water bus to Venice. And while you can drive or be driven, you will not be able to drive in the city all the way to your property. Venice Marco Polo is the fourth busiest airport in Italy and has low-cost flights throughout the year. Alternatively, you could take a more convoluted route through Europe to Venice via train and ferry.
Venice enjoys warm summers, though its location in the north of Italy means that it can still see a fair amount of rain and even snow in the winter. The hottest months are July and August with an average daily maximum of 28°C and ten hours of sunshine a day. But from April to October, you can appreciate the place without feeling much of a chill. The coldest month of all is January with an average daily maximum of 7.6 degrees.
When it comes to property for sale in Venice, it is possible to find properties that need to be renovated for under €120,000. A small apartment can be purchased for upwards of €150,000. Studios for the price can be found in good quality while a two-to-three bedroom would likely need some work. Unsurprisingly, Venice has a thriving high-end property market with incredibly beautiful apartments to purchase, in old Venetian style with brilliant water views. Although it is important to check the rules, if you are considering renting out your property in Venice, it is certain to attract interest. Venice is on almost everyone’s bucket list, be it for family vacations or a honeymoon.
