Ribeira Seca and Conceição (Municipality of Ribeira Grande) and São Miguel and São Pedro (Municipality of Vila Franca do Campo). The name of this parish is linked to the fact that in one of the existing streams there is a waterfall about 30 meters high, hence the name "Água d'Alto". Gaspar Frutuoso, a well-known chronicler, mentions that, on that river, there would have been four sugar mills, at the time when sugar cane was a successful crop.

The foundation of the town of Água d'Alto dates back to 1511, and it remained an integral part of the parish of São Pedro until August 1907, when it was elevated to the status of parish. Lugar da Praia is also part of this parish, located next to the river with the same name. This is a small village that, due to its specific characteristics, was designated in 1982 as a "Classified Place" by the Regional Government of the Azores.
