Santa Bárbara is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande (Azores), with an area of 12.73 km and 1,275 inhabitants (2011). It has a population density of 100.2 inhabitants/km . It is an essentially rural parish, with very fertile soils, where most of its inhabitants are dedicated to the primary sector, although the tertiary sector has been gaining ground.
On the North Coast is Santa Bárbara beach (or Areal de Santa Bárbara, or Areais), known for its world-class waves. The beach has a long sandy beach and is a place that all surfers visit, being also pleasant for bathers.
Currently, Santa Bárbara beach annually hosts a stage of the ASP World Tour, the Sata Airlines Azores Pro, and a stage of the European Junior Pro, usually in September.
Its area extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the crater of Lagoa do Fogo. Lovers of outdoor activities will find a lot of diversity in the parish, which can range from pedestrian walks, to paragliding, including mountain biking, among others.
