According to the first Azorean historians, the name of this parish derives from the fact that it was its founder Inês da Maia, a noblewoman who settled here at the end of the fifteenth
century.This parish is one of the oldest in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, having its settlement began soon after the discovery of the island, which is witnessed by the very construction of its church that goes back, In 1522 it already had its third vicar. Maia was one of the places on the north coast of São Miguel that developed the most because a hundred years after its foundation it was already a parish.
Its parish church, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, dates from 1812. It originated in a chapel of the sixteenth century, expanded in the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries.The Solar de Lalém, noble house remade in the nineteenth century, with chapel and gate of the eighteenth century, is a beautiful example of Azorean architecture.
In place of Gorreana there are unique tea plantations in Europe. In the centenary Gorreana tea factory, this prized infusion is prepared from various species grown there.
