Originally the Arrifes were one of the favorite places for the nobility and rich burghers of Ponta Delgada, to have their farms and summer houses.

Some old buildings, property deeds and the survival of some members of these families, of this are proof. The main activity is agriculture, this parish being the largest dairy basin in the Azores. In this area there are also factories of dairy products and derivatives.
