Also encompassing the place of Ribeira Funda, the parish of Fenais da Ajuda is the easternmost of the municipality of Ribeira Grande.
Located on the north coast of the island of São Miguel, this parish faces the sea and the parishes of Lomba da Maia and Lomba de São Pedro (municipality of Ribeira Grande) and Furnas (municipality of Povoação).
The parish of Fenais da Ajuda is so named due to the abundance of hay, which once existed and, d'Ajuda in horra of the patron saint of the former Franciscan Convent that existed in the place. Likewise, this locality also known as Fenais da Vera Cruz, due to the similarity of its tip with a cross, or Fenais da Maia, because it was the term of the parish of Maia.
The first inhabitants of this parish came from Maia, settling here around 1500, where they built a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Kings Magos, protectors of navigation and Portuguese discoveries.
In 1541, this place was elevated to parish. In 1832 the parish church of the Holy Magi was built in 1843.
In place of Ribeira Funda, whose toponym comes from the fact that it is situated in a "deep stream", there is the parish church of Our Lady of Affliction.
