Lagos is a lovely city to the west of the Algarve with a charming old city that should be visited. The beaches are gorgeous and backed by high cliffs which protect the coast from the cooler waters straight from the Atlantic. The rugged landscape is windswept with more rain than the central and eastern part of the Algarve while the vegetation gets sparser the further west one travels. Only 1.5 hours on the motorway to Faro International Airport while on the EN125 it can take considerably longer especially with the mid summer traffic.
