Lanzarote is the easternmost island of The Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
Lanzarote lies 125 kilometres off the north coast of Africa and 200 kilometres from mainland Spain, around a four-hour flight from the UK.
Lanzarote has a fascinating landscape. It has been made a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. This means it’s a protected area for flora and fauna, protected by UNESCO. The interior is arid, with long sweeping vistas punctuated by ancient volcanoes. Or not so ancient – the mountains include Famara, Montanas del Fuego and Ajaches, while the area now known as Timanfaya National Park is a volcano which last erupted in 1736. There’s also a desert – El Jable – which lies just south of the Famara mountains.
Only 26.5km of Lanzarote’s coastline is sand and beaches, the rest is rocky. The sandy beaches are popular with surfers and there is quite a community on the western side around La Santa and Caleta de Famara. Those same waves crash onto the rocky coast dramatically.
The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, over on its easterly coast.
Property in Lanzarote is widely sought-after due to the warm weather the island enjoys all year round. Because it’s kept cool all year by sea breezes, despite being on the same latitude as the Sahara, Lanzarote is named the “Island of Eternal Spring”. The average temperature in August, typically the hottest month, is only around 25°C – and it’s often that temperature in winter too. Rain is rare in Lanzarote but when it falls the desert comes alive with green shoots and wild flowers. Lanzarote is famous for its honey, but also has thriving viniculture and wonderful wines.
Property for sale in Lanzarote is unlike that in mainland Spain, and even the other Canaries, largely due to the efforts of one man – Cesar Manrique. He became worried about overdevelopment in the 1980s and led a campaign to limit most buildings to the traditional white, low level buildings with green shutters. You can still find some traditional apartments, houses, cottages, and villas for sale in Lanzarote, but development tends to be better quality and low-rise. The most popular areas include Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. These areas have a high number of expats, meaning English is also widely spoken.
The northern area is less developed and relatively green, with little villages and friendly towns offering a more traditional Spanish lifestyle including markets. However. Nowhere on the island is very far away, being just around 70 kilometres at its longest point. Hence while the flight may be a little longer than mainland Spain, the transfer to your home should not be.
Lanzarote is a popular tourist attraction too and welcomes over three million visitors from abroad every year – great news if you’re looking to invest in the property market. There’s a reliable return on holiday homes and investment properties in Lanzarote.
