I've never been a comfortable vacation type. But this time I needed something different in my life. A refuge. So, pushed by a Sicilian friend, I ended up here, a few kilometers from Piazza Armerina, immersed in the rugged and beautiful countryside of the Sicilian hinterland. The mansion had been described to me as “a dream of stone”, and when I walked through the iron gate, I realized it was no exaggeration. The house, ancient but completely renovated, seems to emerge from the earth itself. It is built with light stone from the Aidone mountains, handmade, alive under the sun. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed by a tidy and fragrant garden, with olive trees, ripe figs and smooth stone paths. But the heart of the outdoor space is undoubtedly the square barbecue: modern, elegant, with one side entirely dedicated to cooking pizzas. On the first evening, I lit a fire, mixed with local flour and baked my first pizza, watching the hills turn golden. The villa opens with a bright ground floor: a modern kitchen, where light enters slices from the windows, blends with a functional living room furnished with a large modular sofa. That's where I spent my evenings, reading, music and silence. There is also a basic bathroom and a practical storage room, where I have placed my backpack and hiking shoes. On the first floor, two bedrooms overlook small wrought-iron balconies, from which you can enjoy a different view every morning: light fog, sharp sun, wind in the leaves, and then... silence. Here too, a modern and well-kept bathroom, with simple but elegant finishes. The attic was a real surprise: a single large open space, naturally divided into two areas by a play of different heights. I chose the highest part to create a small photography studio, while in the lowest area I spread a carpet, placed pillows, books and a floor lamp. Exposed wooden beams are the only reference to tradition in an environment with an essential and contemporary taste. The secluded location is what makes this place truly special. Piazza Armerina is just a few minutes away by bicycle. There I walked through baroque alleys, tasted freshly stuffed cannoli and visited the famous Villa Romana del Casale, with its breathtaking mosaics. But every time, I couldn't wait to return to these hot, silent stones. When the sun goes down, the walls turn orange, and everything seems suspended. This villa is a place where the ancient stays outside, carved in stone, while the modern welcomes you inside with style and simplicity. It is the perfect balance between history and present, between roots and freedom. A place that speaks to you, observes you, protects you. A light snow goes down while I go down to the street where a taxi awaits me. It is my first day of vacation, I have left the office for a few hours, just enough time to spend home to take the suitcase, Oreste, my coal -colored Cocker and reach the airport. It will be strange for the first time not to celebrate Christmas in Turin with friends and relatives, but when I saw the images of this property I understood that I finally found what I was looking for. Landed in Sicily I am welcomed by the scent of the sun and the sea, but what I am looking for between the crowd is the unmistakable note of Bosco di Bleu de Chanel, the good smell of my husband. We booked for these holidays in a splendid hotel in Syracuse, where our children will spend the days between Christmas and New Year with us. I transmitted my impatience to see the property also in Tilly who in the journey between the hotel and the house looks like a flipper ball. We are about to see an independent villa that had its births like us in the 70s. What struck me are the spaces, it is around 140 square meters on two levels on a lot of about 1000 m, perfect dimensions when we find ourselves all together and the fact give to be located on two levels allows us to use the ground floor with garden in which to make the pool create when we are alone. While waiting for a taxi outside Comiso airport, I am kissed by the tender April sun. I fear that I will be making the journey with an anonymous new car with a chemical scent and a noisy young man. The "why not" was the answer I was hoping for and so we head together towards the first property. I understand why he chose this first, it's a villa, directly overlooking the sea. It's not a sumptuous and a bit snobbish modern villa all glass and steel, honestly it looks a bit like an old fisherman with this slightly cracked external shell. I cross the boundary wall welcomed by the serenity of seaside places. The ground floor of the house is a large porch, we could say that this house is almost a stilt house. At the moment it doesn't seem very used but I think that adorned with plants and with some sliding glass doors it will be the place for moments of contemplation and conversation. Here, you can sit with a good book or sip a cup of mint tea, while the sun rises in the sky, painting the world with golden shades. In one corner a garage, discreet and functional, ready to store cars and bicycles, symbols of daily adventures along the coast. I generally look at houses for the light and the spaces because the house is an intimate place and needs to be personalized. Casa Viola - Gratteri A historic little home in the heart of one of our favourite Sicilian villages, Casa Viola in Gratteri is a real winner at the affordable asking price. INTELLIGENTLY USED SPACE ON FOUR FLOORS The cosy little town house in fact offers 95m2 of living space, with a simple floor plan that sees one main room and one secondary space on each level. Starting from the bottom, we find two double bedrooms on the lowest two storeys of the property, each of which is actually set below the street level but open at the far side thanks to the steep hillside on which the house has been built.
