Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily. You’ll find it in north of Tunisia and immediately south of the French island of Corsica. Some are surprised by Sardinia’s size: it is bigger than Cyprus. Yet, Sardinia also has one of the lowest population densities in Italy, so residents can enjoy the space. Although part of Italy, Sardinia has its own distinct identity. While Italian is widely spoken, so is Sardinian, a neo-Latin language with Spanish influences, you can even hear some Catalan. The region has a varied history, with empires journeying through it, including the Phoenicians, Vandals, Byzantines, and, most notably, the Spanish.
Sardinia boasts of the largest number of forests in all of Italy. The Oasi Bidderosa, a breathtaking pine forest, is a particular favourite hiking and sightseeing. While there’s lots of unique fauna and flora to explore, Sardinia’s happiest residents are the “genti arrubia”, which translates to the “red people”, otherwise known as the pink flamingo.
In addition, Sardinia is home to stunning beaches, many of which have been heralded as Caribbean-like. Plus, in the north coast alone, you will find 80 coves. The Emerald Coast is the favourite of the rich and glamorous, with its exclusive resorts and superyachts. The most famous beach is Cala Brandinchi, nicknamed “Little Tahiti” for its extremely clear, shallow waters, soft sand, and surrounding pine trees. Meanwhile, Spiaggia Le Dune di Piscinas is a challenging to get to nudist beach.
The capital and largest city in Sardinia is Cagliari. Nestled between the sea and limestone rocks, Caligari is a vibrant place to be, year-round. The Cagliari Marina is an 8km stretch across the Potteo Beach, dotted with locals enjoying a meal in one of the many waterfront restaurants. There’s lots to see: the main place of worship, Cathedral of Santa Maria in Cagliari, with touches from the Romanesque, Pisan and Gothic. For your food shopping needs, head to the Market of San Benedetto in Cagliari, the largest covered food market in Italy. Then there’s the Orto dei Cappuccini, the Garden of the Capuchins, for when you want to be surrounded by greenery.
As well as classic Italian food, and a heavy focus on seafood, Sardinia has its own specialities including roast suckling pig and myrtle-stuffed wild boar.
May experiences highs of 24°C and this warm weather lasts through to September. August is the hottest month, seeing 32-degree heat. By October, the temperature drops to 19°C, with January being the coldest month, but still, it does experience highs of 14 degrees.
Sardinia has three airports: Alghero, Cagliari, and Olbia. All have budget-friendly flights to the rest of Europe, with an increase in the number of flights during the summer months.
When it comes to property for sale in Sardinia, the options vary from small apartments to rustic country homes to luxury villas. For a small apartment in Sardinia, you will need a starting budget of at least €100,000. For this price, you can expect to be close to the sea, amenities, and within easy driving distance of an airport. Meanwhile, the cost of a villa for sale in Sardinia is around €300,000. The closer to the sea you choose to be, the bigger the budget you will need – but inland, there are beautiful houses for sale, surrounded by the countryside. Given the exalted status of areas like the Emerald Coast, you can also find impressive large villas for sale in Sardinia, with features like a private swimming pool and panoramic views.
