Calabria is a region in southern Italy, comprising of the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Calabria is a peninsula of irregular shaping, jutting out away from Italy, separating the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. In other words, it is the toe of Italy’s boot. From some parts, you can spy Sicily right across the water. Calabria has the feel of an uncensored Italy, one that has not been tidied up for tourism. While northern Italians have long since known about this dreamy location, it is slowly gaining attention from overseas holidaymakers and buyers. Any property for sale in Calabria will benefit from its 500 miles of coastline, which changes from dramatic, rocky coves to never-ending stretches of white sand. The most famous of all is the “Coast of the Gods”, “La Costa Degli Dei”, a stretch of 55km along the western Tyrrhenian, within the province of Vibo Valentia. It boasts of golden sands and bathwater-clear turquoise waters.
Calabria is a beautiful mountainous and hilly region. The national parks include: Pollino National Park in the north, which is Italy’s largest protected area; Sila National Park, named “The Forest of Giants” for its tall trees, in the centre; and Aspromonte National Park in the south, from here, you can spy Mount Etna on Sicily in the distance. All provide endless days of birdwatching, hiking, horse-riding, and mountain-biking.
While Calabria is not quite as full to the brim with museums and galleries as more popular locations such as Tuscany, there are still sites to see, such as the Santa Maria dell’Isola, a stunning church on a rocky perch in Tropea. Plus, the Piedigrotta Church is a worth an explore, it is situated on a beach and is carved out of sedimentary rock.
Similar to nearby Sicily, Calabria has endured a long history of invasion and plunder. Today, this can be felt through its food, with Greek and Arabic influences. Swordfish, sardines and tuna are often on the menu. While aubergines and Tropea onions are everywhere. Calabria tops Italian desserts with Tartfuo, where two flavours of ice cream are formed around a centre of chocolate sauce or fruit syrup, then wrapped in sugar paper or covered in another sweet sauce and frozen solid.
As Calabria is off-the-beaten track, it is a little more complicated to get to than more well-known Italian locations. To fly there, you will have to stop off at Milan (or another major airport) and then fly on to Reggio Calabria or Lamezia Terme Airport.
Being in the south, Calabria enjoys hot, dry summers and mild winters. The hottest month is July with an average daily maximum of 30°C. Temperatures are warm enough to enjoy the beach from May to October. January is the coldest month, but even then, it experiences highs of 14 degrees.
When it comes to property for sale in Calabria, ruins can be purchased for as little as €15,000 – they could be transformed into a truly beautiful home, should you be up for the challenge. Moreover, if you prefer somewhere more or less ready to move into, the starting price for an apartment for sale in Calabria is €80,000. Furthermore, the typical price for a four-bedroom villa in Calabria is €200,000 and up. Calabria does not have an expansive luxury property market, if you have a budget of a million or more, then you will be able to purchase a sprawling detached house with seven bedrooms or more. Overall, Calabria’s property prices are considerably more affordable than that of other Italian seaside destinations, such as the Amalfi Coast.
