Villa in Altopiano della Vigolana
Altopiano della Vigolana, Trento
A few days earlier, I had received an unexpected inheritance, a bequest from a distant aunt, one of those relatives whom life keeps at the edges of memory and who, just when they seem to belong to the past, manage to leave behind something capable of changing the future. So, together with my family, we had begun to dream big. For years we had lived in our practical city apartment, comfortable, functional, even reassuring, but not poetic in the slightest. When the inheritance arrived, we realized that our idea of the future needed a few more square meters and, above all, a little sky. It was my son who suggested the method. He took a map of Trento and the surrounding area, spread it out on the kitchen table and established the rules: one of us would be blindfolded, would hold a pencil and let it fall onto the map. Wherever it landed, that was where we would look for a home. Naturally, no one pointed out that, we could have relied on slightly more scientific criteria. The pencil struck the back of the Vigolana. We looked at each other. It seemed like a sign. And at that moment, we wanted to believe in signs. We were looking for a place away from the noise, a space that could truly become ours, where the days would have time to unfold and the seasons could enter through the windows. That was how we arrived in Vattaro. The first thing that struck me about the house was the greenery: a private space that seemed to embrace it, alternating between lawn and paved areas. And then there was the gazebo, a sort of room without walls, perfect for summer evenings, when the day stubbornly refuses to end, or for endless winter Sundays. The house, built in 2014, was the result of careful and meticulous work by a local company, with solid concrete foundations and floors in eco-friendly wood. On the ground floor, there were two garages, the laundry room, utility spaces, the hallway and the boiler room: all those things a house needs and that no one ever mentions when selling it, but which then become indispensable. All you had to do, however, was climb the stairs, either inside or outside, to reach the light. The living area was spacious and bright. The large eat-in kitchen seemed made for long dinners, the living room for conversations and the relaxation area for those hours when absolutely nothing is done, an activity that modern life unfairly considers unproductive. And then there was the tiled stove: large, warm, reassuring, capable on cold days of embracing everyone like a blanket. Every room had its own balcony, accessible through large windows that let the landscape in almost without asking permission. Upstairs, wood took the place of brick and the whitewashed beams ran across the ceiling like branches of a tree . Four perfect bedrooms: one twin, two doubles and the master bedroom, with its en suite bathroom. A third bathroom completed the floor. But it was above all the French doors that gave those rooms a special feeling. From each one, you stepped out onto a balcony beyond which lay the valley and the Vigolana. But the surprises did not end there, we learned in fact that it was possible to build another little house in the garden, even the future for our children was already there. While, embraced by my husband, I watched the sun sink behind the mountains and the cool air in my hair, the warmth filled my heart, I was finally home.

House in Gratteri
Gratteri, Palermo
Casa Vanessa - Gratteri Just outside the Madonie village of Gratteri, Casa Vanessa is a two-bedroom country house with its own olive grove. Its panoramic terrace looks out over green hills and mountain peaks. Two Bedrooms, Kitchen-Living Room and a 25m2 Outbuilding The main house has a living room with kitchen of about 20m2, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The roofs are finished, and the aluminium double-glazed windows have shutters and built-in mosquito screens. Inside, the walls, floors and some of the systems are still to be completed. The separate outbuilding is further along, with plastered walls, laid floors and its systems installed. The owners have planned a roof linking the two buildings, which would give you a sheltered outdoor space between them. Between Olive Terraces and the Madonie Peaks The terraced land below the house holds about thirty olive trees, which produced roughly 70kg of oil last year. Figs, prickly pears, pears, peaches, plums and cherries grow here too, and the land extends up the hillside beyond the current fence. A quiet, level lane leads into Gratteri, where shops, bars and a pharmacy are open all year. Cefalù and the beach at Gorgo Lungo are about half an hour away. Palermo airport is around 90 minutes away and the ski slopes of Piano Battaglia lie just to the south. Put the Finishing Touches in Your Own Style Finishing a house is a challenge, but it is also the most creative way to own one, and here the heavy lifting is already done. You choose the floors, tiles and colours, and the concrete terrace under a large walnut tree could be paved as an outdoor dining room for family or holiday guests. All the work together is estimated at around €60,000. That means you could buy and finish Casa Vanessa for under €200,000, giving you a mid-priced holiday home with estimated letting income of around €20,000 a year. It would also make an affordable permanent home in beautiful countryside. FOR A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE

Italy
Property for sale in Italy divides between move-in homes and restoration projects, and the asking price rarely shows which is which. Prices run from around €20,000 (£17,000) to over €2m, with 504 homes under €100,000.
Tuscany and the northern lakes sit at the top, while Umbria, Abruzzo, Apulia and Sicily return far more house for the money. Use the filters to narrow by region, price and property type.
Why buy property in Italy
Italy offers the widest gap between entry and prime of any market we cover. Prices run from around €20,000 for a village house needing work to over €2m for a Tuscan estate, with 1,693 homes inside a €300,000 budget. Tuscany, Umbria and the northern lakes carry the recognisable names and the prices to match, while Abruzzo, Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia return considerably more space for the same money. Restoration is the norm rather than the exception, and the cost of the work is rarely reflected in the asking price.

Can foreigners buy property in Italy?
Yes—foreigners can buy property in Italy, including non-residents. In many cases the process is straightforward, but some non-EU buyers may need to meet Italy’s reciprocity principle (your notary/lawyer can confirm based on nationality).
The purchase is completed before an Italian notary (notaio), who verifies the legal title and registers the deed. Buying property does not automatically give you residency, so plan visas/residency separately if you want to stay long-term.
What is the property buying process in Italy?
A typical Italy purchase follows:
(1) offer accepted,
(2) due diligence (title, mortgages/charges, planning and cadastral conformity),
(3) preliminary contract (compromesso) with deposit (caparra),
(4) mortgage/finance (if needed) and final checks,
(5) completion at the notary signing the deed (rogito) and transferring funds,
(6) notary registers ownership with the land registry and updates cadastral records.
In Italy, verifying urban planning + cadastral conformity (often with a geometra) is a major risk-reducer, especially for older homes.
